Getting started guide

Getting started — for jOverseer desktop players

JOverseerWeb is a companion to the desktop app you already use, built to be at its best on your phone. Same game, same files — no install needed, though you can add it to your home screen as an app (and you'll want to, for turn alerts).

Contents: Load your game · Each new turn · Turns by email · Install as an app · Turn alerts · Turn PDFs · Where things live · What's different

1. Load your game

You already have the important file: your .jov saved game from desktop jOverseer.

  • Quick look, no account — on the home page, upload a .jov and your latest turn opens straight away. Nothing is kept on the server; close the page and it's gone.
  • Keep your games (recommended) — create a free account, then in My Games upload the .jov once. Your game history, turn switching, and everything below needs an account.

Getting the .jov to your phone: save it to iCloud Drive / Google Drive / OneDrive from your computer and pick it from the upload dialog on your phone — or simpler, open joweb.digidurham.co.uk in your computer's browser and do the one-off setup there; your games are then waiting in My Games on your phone, where each new turn can arrive by email (section 3).

2. Each new turn

When results arrive, add them to your saved game. Three ways, any mix:

  • Forward the results email — the easiest on a phone. See section 3.
  • Upload the results zip as delivered (per-nation zip, or a whole-team zip) from the game's page in My Games. The XMLs import and the turn PDFs attach automatically.
  • Upload loose files — .xml and .pdf work too.

You don't need to unzip anything, and duplicates are handled — importing the same turn twice does no harm.

3. Turns by email

Forward your results email — with its attachments — to:

joweb@digidurham.co.uk

Rules of the road:

  • Forward from the email address your JOWeb account is registered under. That's how the files find your account; mail from unknown senders is ignored.
  • Within a few minutes the files appear in the inbox panel at the top of My Games, grouped by game and turn. Nothing touches your saved game until you tap Import all — you stay in control.
  • Team games: forward the individual nation emails, the whole-team zip email, or both. Overlaps are deduplicated.

Auto-forwarding (so future turns arrive with no effort): most providers can forward matching mail automatically — filter on subjects containing "MEPBM Results" (other, non-results mail comes from the same GSI address, so filter on subject rather than sender) and forward to joweb@digidurham.co.uk.

Note for Gmail: Google first asks you to confirm the forward — when its request arrives, JOWeb sends you an alert and shows a Confirm button in your My Games inbox; one tap takes you to Google's page to approve it.

4. Install as an app

JOWeb is an installable web app — full screen, an icon on your home screen, and on iOS it's required for turn alerts.

  • iPhone / iPad: open joweb.digidurham.co.uk in Safari → Share button → Add to Home Screen.
  • Android: open it in Chrome → menu (⋮) → Add to home screen (or tap the install prompt if offered).

5. Turn alerts

Once signed in, My Games shows a turn alerts toggle. Switch it on and your phone gets a notification the moment emailed turn files land in your inbox panel — results day just got better. On iPhone the toggle appears only in the installed app (section 4); on Android the plain browser works too.

6. Turn PDFs

The official turn PDF that comes with your results is kept alongside each turn — emailed or uploaded, it attaches automatically. Open it from the Turn Results view; it displays inside the app, no download needed.

7. Where things live

The desktop features you use, and where to find them here:

8. What's different

  • JOWeb reads your game and helps you play it; order submission to your GM still happens the way it always has — write orders here and export the order file, then submit from desktop jOverseer as usual — GSI prefers that to email. Direct submission from JOWeb is coming.
  • Order checking and turn prediction go further than the desktop app. Every order is checked against your whole turn in the order the game resolves it — gold, troops, ships, who is where, what an earlier order changes — with success odds measured from real games, and the predicted turn shows what your draft orders should produce: moves, battles, captures, gold and loyalty.
  • One .jov per game: re-uploading a .jov replaces that game's data (your turn history from imported results is what builds up over time).
